Double Your Impact: Corporate Matching Gifts

Your donations could go even further!

Did you know your employer might help double your support for Birney students? Many companies match charitable donations made by their employees, providing additional funding for the programs that make Birney special. For example, if you donate $100 to our Read-a-thon and your employer offers a dollar-for-dollar match, your gift could generate $200 in total support for Birney at no additional cost to you!

How Do Corporate Matching Gifts Work?

  1. Make your Read-a-thon donation
Support your child’s reading journey by donating through our Read-a-thon fundraising page.

  2. Check your employer’s matching gift program
Search your company’s employee benefits or charitable giving portal, or ask your HR team whether your employer matches donations to eligible nonprofits. Your spouse or partner’s employer may also participate!

  3. Submit a matching gift request
Follow your employer’s instructions. You may need your donation confirmation, receipt, or other documentation from the Read-a-thon. Friends of Alice Birney is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit with tax ID #27-2414127.

  4. Help Birney receive additional funding!
If approved, your employer sends the matching funds to Friends of Alice Birney Elementary (FOABE), our school’s nonprofit fundraising organization. These additional dollars help support enriching educational opportunities for all Birney students.

Because Read-a-thon donations are collected through our fundraising platform, please confirm that your employer accepts donations made through third-party fundraising platforms before submitting your request. Keep your donation confirmation and follow your employer’s instructions.

Does My Employer Offer Matching Gifts?

Many employers offer charitable matching programs, and some San Diego-area employers are known for supporting employee giving.

Here are a few companies worth checking:

This list is a starting point, not a guarantee of eligibility. Matching policies change, and programs may have minimum or maximum donation amounts, annual limits, deadlines, or restrictions on eligible organizations and gifts. Always confirm the current requirements with your employer.

Do You Volunteer at Birney?

Some employers offer volunteer grants, which are financial contributions to eligible nonprofits based on the number of hours their employees volunteer. For example, a company might donate to an organization after an employee completes a specified number of volunteer hours.

If you volunteer at Birney events, help with fundraising, or support other eligible activities, ask your employer whether it offers a volunteer grant program. Check which activities qualify and how your hours must be documented.

Please note that volunteer grants are separate from Read-a-thon donation matching, and eligibility depends on your employer’s policies.

Thank you for helping our Birney community thrive! Whether you donate, encourage your child to read, volunteer your time, or request an employer match, your support helps provide enriching experiences and opportunities for all Birney students.
